⦁ What is armored fiber optic cable?
Armored fiber optic cable is a fiber core wrapped with a layer of protective “armor” (stainless steel armored tube) of the cable, this stainless steel armored tube can effectively protect the core from animal bites, moisture erosion or other damage. Simply put, armored fiber optic cables not only have the characteristics of ordinary fiber optic cables, but also provide additional protection for optical fibers, more robust, reliable and durable.
⦁ Armored fiber optic cable construction
Jacket: In the design of an armored cable, the outer jacket protects the cable from solvents and abrasion, and is usually made of plastic, such as polyethylene.
Metal armor: Between the outer jacket and the inner jacket is the armored sleeve, which is difficult to cut, chew and burn, and also prevents the cable from stretching during laying. As shown in the figure below, the 12-core armored fiber optic cable has 12 optical fibers and two layers of inner and outer sheaths, the metal armor is located between the inner and outer sheaths, and there is a layer of aramid between the outer sheath and the metal armor.

⦁ Why Armored Fiber Optic Cable?
In the past, outdoor fiber optic cables were usually laid in strong pipes to prevent the cables from being damaged by external forces. However, this method of laying fiber optic cables is very complicated and can cost a lot of time and labor. Therefore, some people design in the fiber optic cable design to add a layer of protection of the core of the metal armor, that is, we are familiar with the armored fiber optic cable. Armored fiber optic cables are resistant to strong pressure and stretch, can adapt to harsh outdoor environments, and the wiring is much more flexible than pipe wiring. Nowadays, armored fiber optic cable has been widely used in the field of optical communication.
