⦁ Overview of OS1 and OS2 single mode optical fibers
Both OS1 and OS2 fibers are single-mode fibers regulated by the ITU-T standard (i.e., ITU-T Recommendation, which describes the geometrical properties and transmission characteristics of single-mode and multimode fibers). In the ITU-T standard, OS1 single-mode fiber is a conventional single-mode fiber that complies with the G.652.A and G.652B (conventional) fiber standards, while OS2 single-mode fiber is a single-mode fiber that complies with the G.652C and G.652D fiber standards, and is also referred to as low-water-peak or zero-water-peak fiber, which is commonly used in CWDM networks. In addition, a bend-insensitive single-mode fiber with excellent bending resistance is specified in the newly released ITU-T G.657A1 fiber standard.
       ⦁ Difference between OS1 and OS2 single-mode fiber
Attenuation: The attenuation value of OS1 single-mode fiber is larger than that of OS2 single-mode fiber. Normally, the maximum attenuation value of OS1 single-mode fiber in the 1310nm and 1550nm bands is 1.0db/km, while the maximum attenuation value of OS2 in this band is 0.4db/km.
Transmission distance: OS1 and OS2 single-mode fibers have different transmission distances, OS1 single-mode fiber has a maximum transmission distance of 10km, while OS2 single-mode fiber can reach a maximum transmission distance of 200km; in addition to this, OS1 and OS2 single-mode fibers can achieve 1G to 10G transmission rates at different transmission distances, but the difference is that OS2 single-mode fibers can also be used for 40G/100G Ethernet transmission.
Singlemode Fiber ITU-T Standard Maximum Attenuation Value Maximum Transmission Distance Price
OS1 G.652A、G.652B 1.0dB/Km 10km Low
OS2 G.652C、G.652D、G657A1 0.4dB/Km 200Km Relatively high

     ⦁ OS1 and OS2 single-mode fibers: what to choose?
Through the above introduction, it is not difficult to find that OS2 single-mode fiber compared to OS1 single-mode fiber has better performance and lower link loss, and is more suitable for long-distance transmission, in today's high-rate network cabling system it can provide faster rates and more reliable performance. Although OS1 single-mode fiber used to be the standard single-mode fiber, but because of its attenuation, at this stage has been far from being able to meet the growing demand for network reliability and long-distance transmission. As fiber optic technology matures, OS2 single-mode fiber will gradually replace OS1 single-mode fiber as the ideal choice for connecting 1G/10G/40G/100G Ethernet, which will greatly satisfy people's demand for high-performance and high-rate long-distance transmission.
