Lightcounting has released its latest quarterly report on the global optical module market, updating the quarterly sales figures for each optical module segment for digital communications and telecommunications through Q1 2022 and giving a quarterly sales figure forecast for Q2 2022. Details are as follows :
⦁ Industry size: global quarterly optical module sales continue to exceed $2 billion
Global optical module sales reached $2.287 billion in 2021Q4, exceeding $2 billion in a single quarter for the first time. This figure was $2.293 billion in 2022Q1, a year-on-year increase of 44.96%.LightCounting expects that, as demand for fiber optic connectivity remains strong, global optical module sales revenue in 2022Q2 is expected to reach US$2.522 billion, up 38.98% year-on-year.
⦁ Digital communications market: strong demand for high-speed Ethernet optical modules
Despite supply chain shortages, Ethernet optical module sales hit a new record in 2021Q4. Growth came from sales of 100GbE LR4, 200GbE FR4, 400G, and 800G modules.2022Q1 Ethernet optical module sales were $1.300 billion, up 36.27% year-over-year and down slightly sequentially.
LightCounting expects global Ethernet optical module sales to reach $1.422 billion in 2022Q2, maintaining more than 30% year-over-year growth and setting new sales records.
⦁ Telecom market: simultaneous growth in sales of DWDM and FTTx products
Thanks to the growing demand for 400G and above DWDM modules, sales of coherent DWDM modules reached US$449 million in Q1 2022, up 99.96% y-o-y and setting a new sales record.Sales of FTTx optics accelerated in 2021, a trend that was maintained in 2022Q1, and is expected to continue in 2022Q2. Meanwhile, the trend of slowing 5G construction and continued decline in sales of wireless access optical modules has not changed in 2022.
⦁ Industry trend: high-end products enter the scale deployment period
In the CWDM market, Microsoft is a major 400ZR customer, and Amazon is deploying 400ZR+.
Acacia's (Cisco) 2x600G DWDM product sales exceeded LightCounting's previous expectations. In the Ethernet optical module market, 200G and above Ethernet optical module sales exceeded 100G products for the first time in 2021Q4. Although Amazon's 400G DR4 purchases were lower than expected, the demand for 2*200G and 400G high-end optical modules in the North American market remains strong.
