Definition of OM5 Fiber Optic Patch Cord
OM5 fiber optic patch cord is a new fiber optic patch cord standard defined by TIA and IEC, featuring a 50/125 µm fiber diameter. The production process of its fiber preform has been optimized to support higher bandwidth applications, while maintaining full backward compatibility with traditional OM3 and OM4 multimode fiber optic patch cords. In February 2017, TIA specified that the identifying color of OM5 fiber optic patch cords is aqua green. OM3 and OM4 fiber optic patch cords can still be used with OM5 ones, with the only difference being the sheath color.

Advantages of OM5 Fiber Optic Patch Cord
• High Scalability: OM5 fiber optic patch cord can integrate Short-Wave Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SWDM) and parallel transmission technology in the future. It only requires 8 cores of Wideband Multimode Fiber (WBMMF) to support 200/400G Ethernet applications.
• Cost-Effectiveness: By adopting Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology from single-mode fibers, OM5 extends the available wavelength range for network transmission. It can support 4 wavelengths on one core of multimode fiber, reducing the required number of fiber cores by 1/4 and significantly lowering network cabling costs.
• Strong Compatibility and Interoperability: OM5 can support legacy applications just like OM4/OM3 fiber optic patch cords, achieving full compatibility and interoperability with OM4/OM3 models.
Differences Between OM5, OM4 and OM3 Fiber Optic Patch Cords
• Sheath Color: OM3 and OM4 typically have aqua blue sheaths, while OM5 uses an aqua green sheath (the key distinguishing feature).
• Wavelength Support: OM5 operates at 850/1300nm and supports at least four wavelengths. In contrast, OM3 and OM4 usually operate at 850nm and 1310nm, supporting only one wavelength at a time, and their transmission distances vary within the same wavelength window.
• Effective Mode Bandwidth (EMB): OM5 achieves a major breakthrough in EMB. Its EMB reaches 6000 MHz·km at 850nm and 8000 MHz·km at 880nm, which is four times higher than that of traditional OM3 and OM4 multimode fibers.
Optical Modules Suitable for OM5 Fiber Optic Patch Cords
OM5 fiber optic patch cords can be used to connect modules such as QSFP-40G-SR4, QSFP-40G-BIDI-SR-MM850, QSFP-40G-eSR4, QSFP-100G-SR4, and CXP-100G-SR10.
